LOOKING BACK: 20 YEARS OF MSK-IX

  • MSK-IX celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2005 by holding the first peering forum. Back then, Alexei Lesnikov was focused on domains, and hardly paid any attention to anything else. We managed to get him to come, albeit to an informal event. There were 170 people there, which was gratifying. I doubted that anyone would be interested in our undertaking. After socializing with forum guests for some time, Alexei came to me and said: “Now I understand why your IX keeps growing: all the clients are your friends!”

  • The need for a local Internet exchange, at least in Moscow, was obvious 20 years ago, but no one wanted to take up this challenge, considering that the future of this segment was far from certain, above all in terms of business opportunities (there was nothing to sell to end users, and providers were reluctant to pay). At the end of the day, someone had to do it, so the task went to the Russian Research Institute for Public Networks. It was at this institution, where I served as director, that Internet Exchange was established.

  • In 1997, I worked for the Russian Research Institute for Public Networks. Back then we attended lectures by the pioneers of Internet technology. Materials in Russian were practically non-existent, so we had to learn from works by foreign authors. I remember a lecture on routing protocols by a young woman from Relcom. She used unique and peculiar terms, and few could understand the English words she used. One of her lectures was on setting up “negibords,” which as it turned out later, were “neighbors.”

  • I found some interesting quotes from the report on the 2013 World Telecommunication/ICT Policy Forum. Here’s one of them: “Efficient IXs can be created in countries where many stakeholders are engaged in policy making, since IXPs are based on cooperation among stakeholders.”

  • The first Internet exchange point was a network switch brought by Alexander Shcherbakov to M9 telephone central. At that time Alexander worked at Moscow State University. It wasn't long before this switch was serving seven companies who signed special agreements, including Relcom and Demos, the first mass market providers of email services. The switch was installed at M9 sometime in October, and the first Russian Internet Exchange was launched on November 25. There is no precise date, since no ribbon-cutting ceremony was held, so we just agreed to celebrate the anniversary on this day.

  • Moscow suffered a power outage in 2005. Remember when the whole city went dark in the summer? By that time we already had a distributed network in Moscow and a number of reserve communication channels. On that day, MSK-IX continued to work and our customers in the north of Moscow didn't even notice anything. We got many calls due to the persisting confusion between MSK-IX and MMTS-M9. People were calling and asking to turn on diesel generators, although we were not responsible in any way for power supply at M9.
